5 Easy Ways to Clean and Speed Up Your Windows PC

If your Windows PC feels slower than it used to, you may not need a new computer. Unnecessary files, too many startup apps, low storage space, and missed updates can all affect how smoothly your PC runs.

The good news is that Windows includes several built-in tools that can help clean up storage and improve performance. Here are five simple things to try before spending money on upgrades or a replacement computer. Microsoft recommends several of these same steps for improving Windows performance, including freeing storage space, managing startup apps, and optimizing drives.

1. Remove Unnecessary Files

Temporary files, old downloads, items in the Recycle Bin, and other unused files can take up valuable storage space. When a Windows PC is running low on free space, performance can suffer and Windows updates may also become harder to install.

Go to Settings > System > Storage and review the categories using the most space. You can also open Cleanup recommendations to review temporary files, large or unused files, and other items Windows suggests removing. Always review the list before deleting anything you may still need

2. Manage Startup Apps

Too many apps launching automatically when Windows starts can slow down startup and keep using system resources in the background. Microsoft recommends disabling startup apps you do not need running automatically.

Go to Settings > Apps > Startup and review the list of programs. Turn off apps you do not need to open every time you sign in. You can also press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, select Startup apps, and review each app’s startup impact.

Be careful not to disable security software or programs you know you need. Focus on optional apps such as music players, chat programs, launchers, and other software you rarely use immediately after starting your PC.

3. Use Storage Sense

Windows includes a built-in feature called Storage Sense that can automatically remove unnecessary files and help prevent your system drive from filling up. Microsoft says it can clean up items such as temporary files and files that have been sitting in the Recycle Bin.

Go to Settings > System > Storage and turn Storage Sense on. You can also open its settings to choose how often it runs and what types of files it should clean up. By default, Storage Sense does not manage your Downloads folder unless you specifically configure it to do so.

Storage Sense works on the Windows system drive, usually the C: drive. It can be especially helpful on PCs with smaller drives where free space fills up quickly.

4. Keep Windows Updated

Windows updates often include security fixes, bug fixes, and performance improvements that can help your PC run more smoothly. Microsoft recommends keeping Windows up to date for both performance and security.

Go to Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. If updates are available, select Download & install, then restart your computer if Windows asks you to complete the installation.

You can also check Advanced options > Optional updates for additional updates, including some driver updates that may help with hardware performance or compatibility.

5. Optimize Your Drives

Windows can optimize your storage drives to help maintain performance. For traditional hard disk drives (HDDs), Windows uses defragmentation to reorganize files. For solid-state drives (SSDs), Windows uses a different optimization process called TRIM rather than traditional defragmentation.

Type Defragment and Optimize Drives in the Windows search box and open the tool. Select the drive you want to check, then choose Optimize. If you have an HDD, you can also select Analyze first to see whether it needs optimization.

Windows normally optimizes drives automatically on a schedule, so you usually do not need to run this manually very often.
